Profile Picture species: a Rainbow Lorikeet. It's a furiously hot and muggy day out in the Australian jungle. It rained recently, adding moisture to the air, but doing nothing to provide relief from the sweltering heat. Your boots squelch and squish the mossy ground beneath you, sounding quite like a large jellyfish with feet. Pausing momentarily to brush mosquitoes out of your face, you grab your machete and hack through some tall, thick grass and continue on your way. There's a faint chattering noise composed of small screeches, growing louder as you get closer to your destination. Your heartbeat picks up as a flash of brilliant red, emerald green, striking yellow, a burning orange smear and iridescent blue rockets above you, flying wildly from tree to tree in a mad, yet orderly dance. Finally! Three long, tedious hours of suffering this ridiculous heat, a swarm of bugs constantly buzzing around your head, and running away from copperhead snakes has finally paid off! The chattering shrieks and calls of the numerous birds separates into one distinct sound as you realize it's coming from the dazzling Rainbow Lorikeet, happily sitting on a branch fifteen, maybe twenty feet up in an ancient Redwood tree right in front of you. You eagerly snap picture after picture of this funky guy-he's not camera shy in the least! This lovely species is very hyperactive, clever and playful, and love to interact with each other-or even a friendly camera-wielding human! They'll spend all day sipping sweet nectar and munching small insects, sloppily eating fruit-they're VERY messy birds, you've found on previous explorations-when one just so happened to drop a half-eaten mango on your head! They flit about, carefree and wild, in tropical forests, where they thrive. In addition to providing forest entertainment, keeping insects in check, and becoming wonderful companions, larger flocks have been known to chase away other birds from food sites, even noisy, thieving magpies. The handsome specimen above you gives a sudden start, and with a harsh screech, flies away, having spotted a fruit-packed tree off in the distance, you presume. Time to get out of this unfriendly place and back to your cool, insect-free shelter. Turning around, smiling at all the perfect pictures you took, you take one step and-SPLAT! A rainbow-colored bird chatters wildly high above you and flies away, while you pluck a half-eaten mango off of your wide-brimmed hat and chuckle.
